Some love stories don’t have a dramatic reunion or a second-chance moment — Emily and Jonny have simply always been together. High school sweethearts who never looked back, their engagement party at Vetro Restaurant & Lounge in Howard Beach was a celebration that felt less like a milestone and more like an inevitability. The warmth in that room made perfect sense.
The Venue
Vetro’s rooftop lounge set the tone from the moment guests stepped off the elevator. Voted the #1 Best Restaurant in the Tri-State Area by OpenTable, Vetro is known for its panoramic waterfront views of the bay and the kind of polished, elevated atmosphere that makes a celebration feel like an event. The rooftop is an ideal backdrop for a New York party. It’s got open air, warm light, and a setting that does a lot of the work for you.
Cocktail hour welcomed guests as they arrived, giving everyone a chance to settle in and take some photos with the couple before the real festivities began. I love getting these staple photos while everyone looks the freshest and before the food comes out.
At the end of cocktail hour, Jonny’s mom took the floor with heartfelt words and a toast that set the tone for the rest of the evening — warm, sincere, and clearly full of love for this couple. From there, the DJ took over and didn’t let up. The dance floor was full all night, exactly the way an engagement party should be.
Seven years ago, I photographed Jonny’s older sister’s engagement party. That’s how I first met this family — and now, here we are, celebrating the next chapter. Getting to document milestones across a family over the years is one of the most meaningful parts of this work, and Emily and Jonny’s night was a reminder of exactly why. These two have a history, a community, and a lot of people rooting for them. It was a privilege to be in the room.
